Endowments

“The Pacific Athletic Foundation has everything to do with my opportunity to attend and play collegiate tennis at UOP. Without my tennis scholarship funded in part by the gracious Dr. Leland and his wife Stefanie, I do not think my education would have been possible. The PAF has not only been a part of my lifelong dream of playing division I tennis and success in pursuing my undergraduate degree, but my master’s degree as well. Due to an unfortunate ACL injury, I had to sit out my senior year, but all because of Dr. Leland, Stefanie, and athletics, I was given the opportunity to not only start my MBA, but finish playing a sport that has taught me so much in life.
– Christiana Ferrari, Women’s Tennis Alum

“TIGERS FOR LIFE”
ANNUAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS, PROGRAM FUNDS AND AWARDS
Creating a culture of giving to endowments is the University’s highest priority. A substantial endowment improves the University’s overall financial rating and provides funding stability. Program and scholarship endowments for Athletics provide the resources to attract talented student-athletes, retain successful coaches, and improve Pacific’s competitive status.
The University of the Pacific has been competing in intercollegiate athletics for nearly 100 years, yet the first endowment for Athletics was established in 1964. Currently, there are forty (44) scholarship endowments and twelve (12) program funds that generate approximately $90,000 annually.
THE IMPACT OF ENDOWED GIFTS
The costs of operating a Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program are escalating, some faster than the rate of inflation. Tuition, room and board, salaries, recruiting, team travel and other expenses are necessary to be successful in intercollegiate athletics today. For decades Pacific has relied on the annual generosity of its supporters to meet these needs. Endowments offer perpetual financial growth that will strengthen the Tigers for the future.
A named endowment can be established with a minimum of $50,000 and designated for a specific sport or purpose. To fully endow an athletics scholarship, a gift of more than $1,000,000 is necessary to generate the $53,000 necessary to cover the annual cost of tuition, room/board and books for a student-athlete. A gift of $2,000,000 will endow a coaching position, the highest honor that can be bestowed by an athletics department.
Endowments are invested by the University and earn an income in perpetuity. The Board of Regents established a payout rate of 4.5% to protect the purchasing power of the endowment. The income is used, in part or in whole, to meet the necessary expenses of the intercollegiate athletics program.
METHODS OF GIVING
“Gifts of cash, securities, real estate or personal property can be made to the “Tigers for Life” endowments in a variety of ways to meet a donor’s interests. Often there are tax advantages to be considered, so advice from tax or legal consultants are encouraged.”

RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES
An endowment of $50,000 or more be featured prominently in the Alex G. Spanos Center and other university publications.
Scholarship recipients receive a history of the award and its namesake or donors to gain an appreciation of Tiger history. Donors or stewards of endowed scholarships will receive annual endowment reports and have multiple opportunities to meet the recipient during the school year.
Powell Match
University of the Pacific has been honored to receive an extraordinary gift of $125 million from the estate of the late Regents Robert C. and Jeannette Powell. The Powell Fund supports the Powell Scholars as well as the Powell Match program, which will match new endowment gifts up to 1:1 with more than $60 million allocated for endowed scholarship matches and $25 million for endowed academic program matches. An astute businessman, Bob Powell appreciated an opportunity to leverage his philanthropy to inspire others, and with this program, he continues to do so. Jeannette Powell frequently urged the Powell Scholars to “find and follow your passions” and we hope this incredible gift will inspire you to do so as well by taking advantage of this opportunity.
The Powell Match honors their commitment to encourage members of the Pacific community to build endowments through a matching gift program that is significantly improving students’ access to a superior education at the University.
The University is leveraging the transformative Powell estate gift for endowed scholarships and academic programs by challenging and inspiring members of the Pacific family, including Regents, alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends, to create their own philanthropic legacies through endowments to benefit Pacific students and the academic offerings at the University.
